Stuck on Repeat

Damn that Throckey.

Because of him I had to get out my old Commodores Greatest Hits CD.

Listening to the really old stuff, I am reminded that Lionel Richie once had the funk.

What the hell happened to him that crap like "Hello" was foisted on us later on?

Okay, I will give you: "All Night Long," has held up quite well

Brick House. Never heard anything else from him worth a damn. But I only heard the "hits". I can believe he had the funk early on, I just never heard it. I've used "heard" four times in this paragraph.

Too Hot Ta Trot. Slippery When Wet. With all those wokka-wokka 70's guitars and funky horns. And of course the great, hands-on-her-hips, arms-around-his-neck slow-jam "Just to Be Close To You." The first vocal of the song being one of those funk "owwws."

Good stuff.

A parallel that occurred to me while driving back and forth to Boston in a rental with Sirius Radio (I actually didn't break out the iPod and had time plenty of time to think). Stevie Wonder "In The City" or "Superstition" vs. "Lady in Red".

Fuck, was going to post something, but this is the public blog. Um, have a story about a Lionel Richie song. Danced to one with a guy in Chicago the summer before I left ... "You are the sun, you are the rain..."

Oh look, it does NOTHING now. Good.

Oh, Paula, we all have a story about some super-cheesy song. There was me and that Journo student from the editorial staff -- Jim? John? Who the fuck knows -- I met at the Collegian picnic, and that Billy Ocean song, "Suddenly." I cringe, I tell you, I cringe. Worst part about it? I remember I was wearing JAMS when I met him. Sexy, no?

And Paula, be thankful your encounter with this guy didn't ruin a GOOD song for you! I still have a hard time listening to Adam Ant's "Wonderful." Long story for the other blog but maybe I'll try it again this morning.

Ace, I think I must have blocked out "Lady in Red," altogether from my Stevie list because I don't know that song at all! (I was going to use a fancy French word here but kept writing the French word for "eggs" and gave up.)

Remember the song "Penny Lover?" "Penny lover, my love's on fire..."

We used to sing "Penny loafer, my shoe's untied..."

Which is still pretty amusing to me.
