One of My Favorite Words

Schadenfreude.

Roll it around on your tongue. Feel the "r" hawk in the back of your throat.

Listening to NPR as I wake up each day, scanning the BBC headlines, I hum a happy little tune every time the Republicans step in their own poo, which they seem to be unable to avoid doing these days. See, they flung so much of it in the last five years and didn't clean up after themselves, they just won't be able to NOT step in it.

It just makes me happy.

You're probably way too young to remember Watergate firsthand. To live through the era was a daily delight--like watching all the pompous jerks who ever wagged fingers at you in grade school lined up and publicly spanked. Ooohh, they got the vicious Phys Ed coach! Oh, my God, they got the spit-and-polish disciplinarian vice-principal! The one who enforces the dress code! Yayyyyy! They'll never get the evil principal, will they? The one who always keeps his office door locked and who gets on the intercom every morning and gives us little pep talks about doing the right thing? You mean they're really going after him? Really! Damn! Look! He's in the paper! He's resigning! Yayyyyyyyy!

Well, Archer, I kinda remember Watergate, but mostly as an annoyance that pre-empted the afternoon "Star Trek," "Gilligan's Island," and "Petticoat Junction" re-runs. But I could still watch "Speed Racer" and "Ultra-Man" on UHF.
